The ability of our body to cleanse and eliminate waste and toxins is an important step. We are exposed to a multitude of toxins daily. If they accumulate, they contribute to a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, brain fog, inflammation, weight gain, and hormonal imbalances.
Detoxification is a natural process involving several vital organs. It encompasses not only the liver but also the kidneys, skin, and the entire digestive system. This process needs a continuous supply of nutrients to transform fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble waste, which is then expelled through urine, sweat, and stool.
We can support and enhance our detoxification with small yet powerful lifestyle changes.
Detoxification Rich Foods:
Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels sprouts: This family of cruciferous vegetables contains a major compound called sulforaphane. Sulforaphane neutralizes cancer-inducing chemicals and supports the clearance of estrogen from the body.
Garlic and Onion: Both of these foods are high in sulfur which stimulates the production of glutathione. Glutathione is our main antioxidant and aims to help repair cellular damage.
Citrus Fruits: In addition to being high in vitamin C; lemon and limes also stimulate digestive and liver enzymes.
Leafy Greens: Spinach, Kale, and Collard greens are loaded with nutrients all needed to support both phases of detoxification. They are also a good source of chlorophyll which can facilitate binding to heavy metals, fungus, and other toxins.
Flaxseeds: Flax provides both soluble and insoluble fiber, which improves digestion and elimination. Fiber can bind to various unwanted toxins, aiding in their removal from the body.
Hydration:
Water is essential for detoxification. Water helps to flush toxins from the body via the kidneys. (Remember toxins have to be converted to a water-soluble source for elimination). We recommend drinking 96-128oz of water or tea during the day.
Exercise: Our skin is a major detoxification route. Sweating will also release toxins and enhance elimination via the skin. Adding in exercise is a sure way to get you sweating. Aim for cardio for 20-30 minutes. Infrared light therapy can also penetrate deep into tissues to stimulate circulation and promote detoxification.
Sleep:
Our body is pretty active during sleep. It goes into repair mode and does much more detoxifying than during our waking hours. We recommend 7-8 hours of sleep.
Supplementation: Several herbal components can add additional support. The more common ones include milk thistle, dandelion root, MSM, and turmeric. Our favorite supplement is our Detox Support. Glutathione injections are a great tool to boost levels in the body. We recommend one injection twice weekly for 4-6 weeks to further enhance detoxification and cellular repair.
