Glutathione is an essential antioxidant that our bodies produce in small amounts. It is found in every cell, this powerful antioxidant is perhaps our body's best
immune regulator, and boosting its production can help calm the effects of autoimmunity. But the benefits go far beyond the immune system. It’s known as the master antioxidant, because it plays such a huge role in neutralizing free radicals and toxins and aids in the production of other antioxidants like vitamins C and E. Glutathione binds to any free radicals and renders them inactive in the body, negating the effects of chemical toxicity, oxidative stress, and free radical damage that accumulates as we age. Glutathione also plays an important role in good skin health and can improve the brightness of the skin.
Glutathione production changes throughout our life and it declines with age. Aging is caused by free radical damage and depleted glutathione levels might be responsible for oxidative damage to our DNA. Levels tend to drop after age 45, a correlation that might explain the cellular damage we can blame for making us “feel” older.
Glutathione is needed to optimize detoxification. Glutathione is largely responsible for detoxification in the liver. When levels are high enough, the liver uses the antioxidant to transport waste out of cells. But conditions of oxidative stress tend to deplete our stores and keep this powerful antioxidant from completing its job. Other contributors to its lack of production are environmental toxins and stress.
Other benefits of glutathione:
1. Reduce Pain and Inflammation: Glutathione's anti-inflammatory properties can alleviate pain and discomfort associated with various conditions.
2. Enhance Immune Function: Glutathione supports a robust immune system, reducing the risk of infections and enhancing overall wellness.
3. Combat Anxiety and Improve Mental Health: Glutathione's ability to reduce oxidative stress can have a positive impact on mental health, including anxiety and mood disorders.
4. Alleviate Headaches: Glutathione's anti-inflammatory effects may help alleviate headaches, including migraines.
5. Support Autoimmune Conditions: Glutathione can modulate the immune response, potentially benefiting individuals with autoimmune disorders.
6. Improve Digestive Health: By reducing inflammation, Glutathione can support gastrointestinal health and alleviate digestive troubles.
7. Enhance Sleep Quality and Combat Fatigue: Glutathione's role in reducing oxidative stress can contribute to improved sleep quality and increased energy levels.
The richest dietary sources of glutathione are spinach, avocados, asparagus, and okra. Combine with high sulfur and selenium foods to boost glutathione production. Oral supplementation of glutathione is not an effective way to increase levels of this antioxidant, as it is poorly absorbed. Taking supplements that promote glutathione production (N-acetylcysteine, methylsulfonylmethane, alpha lipoic acid, and S-adenosylmethionine) can be beneficial, but injectable or IV glutathione is a preferred way to see a therapeutic effect.
